Multi-Color 3D Printing for Articulated Models: Bambu AMS & MMU Guide

Optimize multi-color printing on articulated figures. Reduce filament waste, calibrate flush volumes, and paint print-in-place joints with Bambu Studio and PrusaSlicer.

Multi-material systems like the Bambu Lab AMS and Prusa MMU3 have revolutionized the articulated 3D printing market. While single-color flexi models are fun, multi-color characters — with distinct eyes, belly scales, horns, and armor accents — command premium attention from collectors and buyers.

However, multi-color articulated prints present two major hurdles: purge waste (poop) and color bleeding inside interlocking joints. Here is how to achieve pristine multi-color articulated figures while minimizing filament waste.

1. Smart Coloring: Keep Hinges Monochromatic

The biggest trap in color painting articulated models is coloring across the joint itself. If a female hinge socket is printed in color A and the internal male pin alternates between color A and color B every layer, your printer will perform dozens of filament swaps on every single layer.

Instead, keep the main articulating body segments in a unified primary filament (e.g. emerald green), and reserve secondary colors for features that only exist on upper layers or external surfaces — such as eyes, horn tips, hats, and dorsal fins.

2. Drastically Reducing Purge Waste (Flush Volume)

Default slicer flush volumes are notoriously conservative. By default, Bambu Studio flushes up to 250–350mm³ per filament change. On a 1,000-swap articulated print, you could easily waste more filament in the purge bucket than ends up in the model.

  • Calibrate Flushing Volumes: Use the auto-calc matrix and test reductions. Moving from dark to light colors (e.g., black to white) requires higher flush (around 220mm³), but light to dark (white to black) can safely drop to 80–110mm³.
  • Flush Into Infill & Support: Check Flush into object's infill. This directs excess purge into the dense inner structure of the slug body where color doesn't matter.

3. Preventing Weak Joints From Thermal Changes

Every time the toolhead travels to the purge chute and wipes, the model cools slightly on the build plate. If your nozzle temperature fluctuates or cooling is overly aggressive, the layer adhesion inside thin hinge links can become brittle.

  • Use premium PLA filaments with matching melt flow indexes (e.g. all Bambu PLA Basic or all Polymaker PolyLite).
  • Avoid mixing PLA with PETG on the same print unless using PETG strictly as a non-bonding support interface.

4. Print Multiple Slugs on the Same Plate

Filament change time and purge waste are determined per layer, not per model. If you print three articulated dragons on the same build plate, the amount of waste generated is virtually identical to printing just one!

Whenever possible, fill your build plate with multiple units of the same color palette to maximize throughput and cut your per-unit waste by 60%–70%.
